A new study found that designer handbags do more than act as a symbol of fashion and status for the woman wearing them. They may also give off a message to other woman to back off. The researchers in the study found that expensive handbags send a very distinct message to other women, to stay away from their man.
The researchers involved in the study were from the University of Minnesota. The study consisted of 600 women who went through a series of experiments. The researchers say that the handbags women carry can act as a shield, protecting them from other females who may pose a threat to their romantic relationship.
In one experiment, the researchers were able to trigger feelings of jealousy in some women, but not in others. The women were asked to draw designer logos on a handbag. The non-jealous women drew small symbols, while the jealous women drew logos that were twice are large.
The study concluded that women wearing luxury items are perceived to have a more devoted partner. Some women asked to comment on the results of the study were skeptical. Many said they buy designer items that they like and it has nothing to do with their man or other women. Does the defense tactic come at a subconscious level?
