Lindsay Lohan to Design Handbags for Ed Hardy

Lindsay Lohan will be designing handbags for Ed Hardy soon enough.

They say that if you first try and you don’t succeed, try again. Can the same be applied to fashion? While certainly designers in the past have had failed lines or have needed revamping at some point, can the same be said for celebrities wanting to break into the fashion world? At the moment, Lindsay Lohan has been trying more to make a career out of designing clothing than getting her acting career back on track. But, when investors won’t fund the latest film and you’re kicked off production, how else will you pass the time and create a paycheck?

For Lindsay, this appears to include dabbling in the fashion world. Last year, she debuted her leggings collection and was an artistic director for Ungaro, an already-floundering house of fashion. Nevertheless, her collection under Ungaro was met with disgust by fashion critics on both sides of the pond and she lasted only one season. Her leggings line, however, seems to go under the radar without much fanfare or jeers.

But, to make herself somewhat relevant, Lohan plans to be designing handbags for Ed Hardy, the brand once favored by club kids and now relegated to designer condoms, Jon Gosselin, and the Jersey Shore crew. Will she fit in or be rejected from even this lower echelon of designer fashion?

Considering the Ungaro collection under Lohan was punctuated by rhinestones, she shouldn’t have a problem creating tattoo-inspired handbags covered with them (why does Ed Hardy put them on every single thing?). Additionally, as a fashion line favored by club kids over the past few years, Ed Hardy and Lohan appear to be on the same page. Christian Audigier’s line has its niche, and Lohan has transformed from a once talented actress into an overgrown club kid. At least she’ll be familiar with their demographic.

Studded handbags have, literally, been all the rage. But whether you’re wild for fashion or express all the rage of a punk rock show, studded handbags have been appropriate for high-end and DIY fashion. In general, the studs used on many handbags this past season have been bullet studs, or rounded studs. Some of these have even been as large as conchos, if you consider studs on leather as western fashion. But, more recently, Lindsay Lohan was spotted with a studded black leather handbag with pyramid studs. Although Lohan isn’t always considered the most up-to-date in fashion, it’s been one of the first times pyramid studs have been spotted on a celebrity since, like, ever.

Pyramid studs have typically been seen as a punk fashion statement. Ever since punk appeared in the ‘70s, studs on leather have been a part of the look accompanying loud and haphazard music by the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. But punk, both music and fashion-wise, has always had a DIY aesthetic: Learn to play the guitar and put those studs in your leather jacket yourself. Now, as the look appears on celebrities around Hollywood, the punk style has essentially gone high-end and, well, corporate, which is something an indie scene never wants to be.

But those blog, generally, has labeled studs part of a western look. Studs are part of western fashion, especially the handbags, jewelry, hats, and belts sold through western accessory retailers like Best Handbag Wholesale. If you can’t tell the difference between what looks somewhat western and what looks like mainstream punk, don’t worry. In general, rounded studs arranged orderly on a handbag give off more of a western vibe, especially when paired with leather fringe, while pyramid studs are distinctly punk.

Black Fringe Handbag Spotted on Lindsay Lohan

Say what you want about Lohan’s now non-existent acting career, but, at least when the paparazzi catch her, she’s sporting some style. In a recent photograph seen on blog Bag That Style, Lindsay Lohan was spotted with two handbags, one of which was a large black suede handbag with fringe along the bottom and silver studs along the perimeter of the bag. In terms of western fashion, this handbag worn by Lohan combines two essential aspects – fringe and studs. The bag itself, especially as it is being worn with an army green leather handbag on Lohan, looks as if it’s being used as a travel bag, instead of an oversized or hobo purse.

Both fringe and studs, especially when combined with leather, also have the appearance of being rocker chic or punk. Although a somewhat rocker chic is in style this season, with celebrities wearing cropped leather jackets or other studded pieces of clothing, these two elements look more western than punk or rocker in many cases, including on the handbag worn by Lindsay Lohan. What’s the difference? Punk or rocker has always been more haphazard, with random studs on a leather jacket or with a spiked collar. Fringe, however, has really only been rocker chic on ‘80s leather jackets sported by hair bands. If Bon Jovi or White Snake and big hair aren’t accompanying this style handbag, it looks more like something to take to a rodeo, especially with the orderly formation of studs around the edge of the bag. In the case of this handbag, the fringe and suede are reminiscent of many western vests and the studs add a little additional bling. As western styles seem to be creeping into the mainstream (python or alligator handbags on celebrities), calling this handbag rocker chic instead of cowgirl doesn’t do the handbag justice.
